What’s Happening
The California State Assembly is holding a special hearing on AB 1468, a bill that would mandate the establishment of statewide ethnic studies content standards that risk promoting one-sided, politically charged, and discriminatory material into every public high school classroom in California.
What are Ethnic Studies Content Standards? For examples of Ethnic Studies Content Standards from other states, see this K-12 example from Oregon, and these K-8 standards from Minnesota, along with grade 9. Supporters of AB 1468 want to see similar standards in California public schools.
What is ICAN’s position on AB 1468? ICAN strongly opposes AB 1468 and any new legislation related to further integrating Ethnic Studies into California public schools. While promoted as an educational equity measure, AB 1468 will open the door to antisemitic and anti-Israel content under the banner of “decolonial” education, without adequate safeguards for Jewish or Israeli-American students.
